Pompeii and Vesuvius with kids

A real Roman city and a volcano you can look into: few days out excite school-age children more. The catch is a lot of walking in the heat, so plan around their legs.

Children enter Pompeii free, and on Vesuvius under-6s are free too. Tours are a different matter: they charge for the seat, the guide and lunch, and each operator draws its age bands differently.

Below: what children pay on each tour, which tours take young children, and how to keep the day manageable.

The quick answer

Under-18s enter Pompeii free; on Vesuvius under-6s are free and under-25s pay EUR 8. Tours still charge child rates, with different age bands: the classic day charges the adult rate from age 7, the Worldtours tours count children as 4 to 12, and the minibus tour does not take under-6s. Best for school-age children who like walking; bring water, hats and snacks.

Is the Pompeii and Vesuvius day trip good for kids?

Yes for school-age children who are happy to walk for a few hours; hard work for toddlers and in summer heat.

The day is 7 to 8 hours, with about two hours on foot in Pompeii and a 40 to 60 minute climb on Vesuvius. Guests travelling with children and grandchildren rate the tours well, and one family on the Elite tour mentions the guide letting a sick child rest on the bus.

Can young children climb Vesuvius?

Many can, with breaks, but it is a steady uphill on loose gravel in the sun; carry little ones or wait at the car park.

Guests take about 40 minutes to an hour to reach the rim. There is a wooden fence along the edge, but hold hands near the viewpoints and on the slippery way down. On the classic day anyone who does not want to climb can wait below. Read the crater walk guide before you decide.

Which tour is best with young children?

The pizza lunch tour takes children from age 3 and lists itself as stroller accessible; the minibus tour, at $97, does not take children under 6.

The classic day charges the adult rate from age 7, which makes it pricier for families with children aged 7 to 17 than tours that count them as children. Check the age bands against your children's ages before you compare prices.

Can you take a stroller to Pompeii and Vesuvius?

Possible but hard: Pompeii's streets are uneven stone with high kerbs, and the crater path is loose gravel.

A baby carrier is far easier at both sites. If you bring a stroller, choose a sturdy one and expect to lift it often.

How do you keep children going in the heat?

Go outside July and August if you can; otherwise hats, sunscreen and a refillable bottle each.

Guests report fountains inside Pompeii for refills, and good guides stop in the shade. Pack snacks, especially on the minibus tour, which does not include lunch. What to wear for Pompeii and Vesuvius has the full list.

What will children find most interesting?

The streets themselves, the brothel's paintings (decide in advance), the theatres and, if your route passes them, the plaster casts of victims, then looking into a real crater.

The casts can upset younger children, so warn them first. Make it a game: spot the stepping stones, the cart ruts in the paving and the bar counters along the streets.

What if the full day is too much?

Do Pompeii only: the half-day trip is about two hours in the ruins and 4 to 5 hours in all.

The Pompeii half-day trip is $87 and counts children as 4 to 17. Or swap the volcano for the coast with Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast.

Shorter day for small legs? The half-day trip is two guided hours in Pompeii.
