Vesuvius and Pompeii in one day, from Naples

A guide walks you through Pompeii's Forum, baths and brothel, you eat pizza, and then a coach drives you up Vesuvius for the walk to the crater rim. It is a simple way to tick off both, with pickup in Naples and both entrance tickets already paid.

Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii Day Trip from Naples

About this experience

Project Napoli Service runs this from Naples every day. You write your hotel, B&B or Airbnb address in the booking, then call the operator after 7 PM the evening before to learn your pickup time and whether the bus comes to your door, close by or to a meeting point. The listing shows departures around 9:45 for cruise passengers, 10:00 for hotels and 10:20 for the railway station.

Pompeii comes first. The coach ride takes about half an hour, and a guide leads you for about 2 hours past the Forum, the baths, the House of the Vettii and the Lupanare. Then pizza with a drink, and the coach climbs to the car park at about 1,000 m. From there the Vesuvius National Park path rises to the crater rim at about 1,170 m. The listing gives 1 hour on the volcano, and guests report 40 minutes to an hour to walk up.

Two honest caveats. This is a big-group day: the listing allows up to 50 travelers, and several guests describe being split and merged into other groups, with a change of bus between Pompeii and Vesuvius. And the crater is weather-dependent. When the park closes the trail, the operator refunds the park ticket only; the day still runs.

  • Both tickets included: Pompeii (EUR 20) and the Vesuvius park (EUR 11)
  • About 2 guided hours in Pompeii
  • Pizza with a drink between the two sites
  • Pickup from your hotel, the station or the cruise port
  • Adult rate from age 7; children 4 to 6 pay a child rate

What guests say

★★★★★

This was a great day trip! Everything was incredibly organized, pickup/drop off was smooth, and our guides were wonderful! Lunch was delicious! I would recommend good shoes for the hike, because it is a bit steep.

Our guide took her time and didn't rush and made it easy for everyone [...] If you go in the late spring to summer beware it is HOT and not much shade. [...] The view from the summit is amazing and worth the trek.

Very moving experience, our tour guide was very informative and passionate about Pompeii. Walking up Mount Vesuvius was challenging for some, but so worth the journey up the mountain

Tips before you book

  • Call the operator after 7 PM the evening before. That call sets your pickup time and place, not the time on your booking.
  • The lead traveler has to send an ID photo; Pompeii tickets carry the holder's name since November 2024.
  • Eat fast or skip dessert. Guests who waited a long time for lunch had less time on the volcano.
  • Wear proper shoes with grip. The crater path is loose volcanic gravel, steep in places.
  • Check the Vesuvius National Park page the day before: an orange weather alert closes the crater automatically.

Frequently asked questions

How long do you spend in Pompeii on this tour?

About 2 hours with a guide, according to the listing. That covers the main sights around the Forum, the baths, the House of the Vettii and the Lupanare: a highlights walk, not the whole 66-hectare site.

How long is the Vesuvius part?

The listing gives 1 hour at the national park. Guests report 40 minutes to an hour to walk up from the car park, so expect a brisk pace. If you'd rather not climb, you can wait below.

What happens if Vesuvius is closed?

The operator refunds the national park ticket (EUR 11). The rest of the day runs as planned. The park closes the crater automatically on orange weather alerts, and guests report closures for strong wind.

Can children join the Vesuvius and Pompeii day trip?

Yes. Adults are 7 and over, children 4 to 6 pay a child rate and infants up to 3 sit on a lap. Under-18s enter Pompeii free, but the tour still charges for transport, lunch and the guide.
