Pompeii and Vesuvius with Lunch and Wine

About this experience

This is Worldtours' slower version of the classic day. The driver waits at your hotel entrance or the cruise terminal with a Worldtours sign, on the same pickup run as the operator's other day trips (7:10 to 8:30 for the listed hotels). One guest was picked up around 8 and headed for lunch at about 11:30 after the Pompeii tour.

In Pompeii you get about 2 hours with a guide. Lunch with a wine tasting follows on the way up the mountain; guests describe a restaurant with a pergola, a few wines poured with the food and, on some days, a walk through the vineyard. The listing then gives two stops of 90 minutes on Vesuvius, with the walk to the crater led by a volcanologist; guests report about 2 hours at the volcano after lunch.

Check the option you book. The listing offers larger groups (up to 40), smaller groups of 18, and VIP groups capped at 8. If fewer than six people share your language, an audio guide replaces the live guide in Pompeii. And one guest put it plainly: the tasting is "just a few different portion of wines with your lunch", not a cellar tour.

What guests say

★★★★★

2 hours guided tour of Pompei, lunch and a wine tasting at a vineyard, and then 2 hours at Vesuvius! Carmine and Lino did a great job! Highly recommended!

If you have the option to do the wine tasting take it. You sit outside under a pergola with a nice mountain breeze instead of the restaurant which seemed warm inside. The climb to the top of Vesuvius wasn't easy but well worth the effort. Take it slow.

I loved the Pompeii tour! Our guide knew so much about the ruins and gave a great history lesson! The wine tasting was at a nice restaurant with incredible food and wine!

The climb up Mt Vesuvius was long but not too steep. The path was gravel and embedded rock but it wasn't too exerting. The reward at the top - seeing inside the crater was cool but the vista of the coast was amazing.

Tips before you book

  • Confirm your pickup time on the dashboard. The listed departure time is not the time the driver comes to you.
  • Cruise guests must give the ship name, docking, disembarkation and re-boarding times when booking.
  • Wear hiking shoes: the listing asks for them, and the path is gravel and embedded rock.
  • Mention food restrictions early. One guest praised how the restaurant handled hers.

Frequently asked questions

How long do you get at Pompeii and Vesuvius?

About 2 hours in Pompeii. The listing then gives about 1 hour 30 minutes on Mount Vesuvius and another 1 hour 30 minutes in the national park, including lunch. Guests report about 2 hours at the volcano after lunch.

Is it a real wine tasting?

It is lunch with several local wines. Some guests had a sommelier and a vineyard walk; one called it a few portions of wine with the meal. Treat it as a good lunch, not a cellar visit.

Can children come on the lunch and wine tour?

Yes. Children 4 to 12 pay a child rate and adults are 13 and over. Under-18s enter Pompeii free, but the child rate still covers transport, lunch and guiding.

Does the tour run in winter?

Yes, with a minimum of 4 guests from November to March (2 from April to October). The crater closes earlier in winter, so the timing is tighter.
