Vesuvius first, then Pompeii, by minibus

A minibus of no more than 16 people leaves Piazza Garibaldi for the volcano in the morning, then spends the afternoon in Pompeii with an archaeologist. It is the cheapest combined day on this site, and the minibus never takes more than 16.

Mt Vesuvius Hike and Pompeii Guided Tour

About this experience

Askos Tours meets you outside the Starhotels Terminus, across the square from Napoli Centrale station. There's no hotel pickup, which is what keeps the price down. The minibus heads straight for Vesuvius, where you get 1 hour 30 minutes on the crater path with an audioguide and a tour leader who stays with the group all day.

Then comes a lunch break and Pompeii. The ticket is a Pompeii Express, and an archaeologist takes you through the Basilica, the Forum, the Forum granaries, Via dell'Abbondanza, the House of Menander, the Lupanar, the small theatre and the Teatro Grande. The listing's stop times add up to about 1 hour 50 minutes inside the ruins.

What to know before you book: food is not included, and guests report that the lunch stop is a shopping mall food court. Some liked the choice; one reviewer was angry about McDonald's and KFC. Doing the volcano first means cooler air on the climb, although one guest found the summit wrapped in morning fog. Children under 6 cannot join.

  • 16 travelers at most, in a minibus
  • Vesuvius in the morning, before the afternoon heat
  • Pompeii with a live archaeologist, skip-the-line
  • Both tickets included
  • The lowest price of the combined days on this site: from $97

Two exceptional guides - Mario in the morning on Vesuvius: loads of fascinating details on volcanoes and history. Miguel in the afternoon at Pompeii: brilliant descriptions and explanations of so many aspects of Roman life. Great pace and lots of photo opportunities.

As a solo traveller this was a great package as it included transportation and amazing tours of both Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii. It was a nice size group and we got a break between both activities to get some lunch.

Tips before you book

  • Pack a sandwich if mall food isn't your thing. Lunch is not included.
  • Bring a passport or ID: the listing requires it, and Pompeii tickets are in your name.
  • Leave suitcases at the station's luggage deposit. Not every minibus has space for them.
  • Bring water for both sites. One guest points out the fountains in Pompeii where you can refill a bottle.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to do Vesuvius or Pompeii first?

This tour does Vesuvius first, which puts the climb in the cooler morning and Pompeii in the afternoon. The trade-off: morning cloud can hide the view from the rim, as one guest found.

Is lunch included on the Askos Tours day?

No. Food and drinks are excluded. Guests report a lunch break at a shopping mall with fast-food and other choices between Vesuvius and Pompeii.

Is there hotel pickup?

No. Everyone meets outside the Starhotels Terminus on Piazza Garibaldi, opposite Naples Central Station, and the tour ends back there.

What if Vesuvius is closed on the day?

The listing says the operator will tell you and propose an alternative activity. One guest who had a stormy day was taken to Herculaneum instead.
